About Vancouver International Marathon Society/ BMO Vancouver Marathon
The BMO Vancouver Marathon and Half Marathon, is organized and operated by the Vancouver International Marathon Society, a non-profit organization. It is one of Canada's largest marathons and has an extensive history within Vancouver and the running community internationally. To make the BMO Vancouver Marathon events a reality, the Society relies on a dedicated group of volunteer Board members, over 4,000 invaluable support volunteers, and staff year round.
The BMO Vancouver Marathon was founded by the Lions Gate Road Runners (LGRR) in 1972. The original course did five loops within Stanley Park similar to the NYC Marathon started the year earlier in Central Park. There were 46 entrants, and it was one of the first marathons to have females included. It is also a founding member of the Association of International Marathons and Road Races (A.I.M.S.). With the continual growth of the event, the Vancouver International Marathon Society was formed in 1987 and has organized the Vancouver International Marathon since 1988, wholly responsible for the staging and growth of this community event. The Society funds the event through sponsorship programs and entry fees. The event also supports five local charities. To learn more about the event and society and what we do, please visit:
