Community Music Challenge

This year look for exciting bands and music groups along both the half and full marathon courses. There will be 30 (yes 30) music groups on course, and additional music stations provided by ROCK 101, 99.3 The Fox, and CKNW AM 980 (our radio sponsors). All of the on course entertainment will be there for runners and spectators to enjoy free of charge!

Fiddlin’ Frenzy is a pair of BC sibling phenoms who have taken the Western competitive Fiddle scene by storm. They are also one of the distinguished music groups to represent Canada to entertain an Olympic audience. This fiddling and clogging duet that performs Cetlic, Metis, Canadian French and traditional music at many events in different countries from North America to China, such as Celticfest Vancouver, Northwest Folklife and 15 of the 2010 Olympic games and had been featured in the Olympic entertainment commercial.

Team Hewitt- Team Hewitt is not your average duo. Although the instruments are acoustic, the sound is more than you expect from just two performers. With the use of ‘live looping’ technology, a full band sound is created and all your favourite songs come to life, just the way you remember them, but like you’ve never seen before.

The Oh Wells- The Oh Wells are CITR Shindig winners, EMP Soundoff finalists, and were in the Peak Performance Project top twenty! In 2012, the band ventured on their first tour across Canada, and are now preparing for a new album to be released in 2013. Their music is a whole slew of catchy indie-pop songs that sound like they had been originally written in a diary. In a good way.

Tambai means “dance” in the Shona language and that is what audiences want to do when they hear this band of 8 young talented artists aged 12 to 17. Tambai marimba have been performing their lively and joyful marimba music, which is rooted in the Zimbabwean marimba tradition, for the last two years. Under the guidance of Robin Layne, the group has developed an exciting and highly entertaining repertoire, which includes their own original compositions. Tambai’s rhythmic and tuneful music, performed with youthful enthusiasm, is a joy to hear and to see.

Posing Til Closing- Posing Til Closing is a 7-piece band that have been performing and rocking BC audiences since 2008. 60′s R&B, 70′s Funk, 80′s Disco to modern day top hits. Folk n’ Roll dipped in the Blues. The Vancouver based trio is comprised of Emmalee Dylan (Chatterton) Watts, Becky (Eve) Wosk, and Julia Clissold. The meeting of these minds was serendipitous; attending the same program through Capilano University, they all soon realized that they’re musical soul-mates deriving influences from the 60′s/70′s, folk, rock, and blues. The group ‘Chatterton Eve’ officially began as an acoustic duo in October 2012 and grew to an electric trio in January 2013. These ladies have big plans for the future.

Play [>] List plays one of the Widest song selections in the industry to date. Playing hits from such artists as FeFe Dobson, Pink, Adele, Carly Rae Jepsenl Katy Perry, Lady GaGa, to Disco, Motown, Country and Rock N Roll. Our music appeals to all ages and is full of high energy and is extremely dancable.

Cakewalk plays fun, danceable music from the 60’s to current hits, including but not limited to Soul, Funk, R&B, Disco, and Pop. Their sincere love of music shows in the way this group entertains the crowd and keeps them dancing all night with song after song of danceable grooves from Jackie Wilson’s 1967 hit “Higher & Higher” to Cee Lo Green’s “Forget You”.

The Scary Lizards- A four piece band that have been playing together in various formations since 1998. They play an eclectic mix of tunes that keep audiences busy on the dance floor. They have their own high energy music, and also do covers ranging from Santana to Foster the People, in styles ranging from Roots Rock to Funk to Rhythm and Blues.

UFV Bhangra Club- UFV Bhangra Club is a newly emerging team from the University of the Fraser Valley. It was founded by students of the university in the fall of 2010 to preserve the art and culture of Bhangra. The club takes part in many different types of events throughout the community.

BC Regiment Band- The Band serves as the regimental band of The British Columbia Regiment (Duke of Connaught’s Own), a Canadian Forces Reserve Armoured Reconnaisance regiment in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Its main roles are:

  • to meet the musical needs of the Canadian Forces and The British Columbia Regiment in ceremonies and military functions, and
  • to assist the Canadian Forces and The British Columbia Regiment in establishing and maintaining a presence in the community

In fulfilling these roles, band members find that the Band meets their own needs as a community music group, much like other community bands or orchestras. From the member’s perspective, the main difference is that, as a military band, marching and drill are sometimes called for. They also play for community events and other “open air concerts”

Cadillac Jack- High-energy , 4-piece cover band with experience playing licensed venues as well as non-profit events including BC Cancer Agency events. Cadillac Jack takes pride in their ability to play music from various genres including classic and modern rock, 80s pop, and R & B. The band has and continues to play venues throughout the Lower Mainland, including Cascades Casino, Foggy Dew Irish Pub, Toby’s on Commercial, Malone’s Bar and Grill, and the Duke of Dublin, and two BC Cancer Agency events. Cadillac Jack takes pride in the band’s musicianship but our stage show demonstrates our ability to engage crowds and have fun.

Delta Drummers- The rhythms of West Africa tell it all. African drumming is the definition of upbeat music, and that is what the Delta Drummers provide. Their repertoire includes African djembe pieces, as well as Latin and Middle Eastern rhythms and jams and feature soloists. Their music becomes infectious.

Persons of Interest- Often referred to (by themselves) as a delusional celt-a-billy band, Persons of Interest is eclectic and irreverant. They combine celtic pub music with other more contemporary folk, country and rock songs, including those of Imelda May, Hank Williams Sr, The Ramones, The Pogues, Wilson Pickett, Carl Perkins, The Band, Bruce Springsteen, The Cranberries, and just about anybody else that they fancy. They also write and perform some of their own songs too.

WEST meets WEST is a multicultural drum and dance group playing the traditional Ivory Coast rhythms from West Africa.

Groove N Tonic- Groove n Tonic is an energetic show band, guaranteed to please any crowd. Their repertoire includes a tasteful blend of R&B, Funk, Rock, Pop and Disco music. The band’s members are all incredibly talented seasoned musicians who love to sing and play, constantly reinventing themselves with their high energy musicality and infallible grooves.

Chibi Taiko-The first children’s taiko ensemble in Canada, Chibi Taiko was formed in the fall of 1993 with the goal of passing this unique and dynamic performing art on to the next generation of Asian Canadians. The Brass Action is a Vancouver-based, high energy, horn-driven, ska band. We’re a five-piece band comprised of guitar, bass, drums, trumpet and trombone. With blaring horns, and a lot to say, they’ve been making noise together for the past four years. Over the past few years, they’ve been playing shows throughout Vancouver and the Lower Mainland, including venues like The Railway Club, The Fairview Pub, The Cellar, and Joe’s Apartment. Recently they’ve been stretching our legs and traveling to Washington, Vancouver Island, Kamloops, Edmonton and Calgary. they were also recently chosen to be in a feature-length movie entitled Horns, due out in 2013.
