A nourished child is a child ready to learn, explore, and experience!
Celebrating our 20th Anniversary in 2013, the KidSafe Project Society provides nurturing safe havens for vulnerable inner-city children when schools are traditionally closed. Many of the 450 children KidSafe serves annually benefit from their schools’ inner-city meal programs to provide their daily nutrition during the school year. Once school closes for Winter, Spring and Summer breaks, KidSafe ensures that this essential service continues.
Every day a child is at a KidSafe Break Program, they receive a healthy hot breakfast, lunch and afternoon snack. Even if cupboards are bare when children return home, KidSafe and our dedicated team rest assured knowing that they will have received a full day’s nutrition while in our care.
All KidSafe meals and snacks are cooked from scratch on-site of each school, by our talented Food Coordinators. In addition to being great chefs, our Food Coordinators are also role-models and teachers. Children spend regular time in the kitchen with these caring adults, where they develop skills and knowledge of health eating and nutrition, and learn how to prepare inexpensive meals at home with their families.
It is KidSafe’s goal that the children we serve develop the capacity to maintain good nutritional practices as part of everyday life. Here is a program story as told by a KidSafe Food Coordinator, that demonstrates how these talented individuals help us achieve this goal.
For many of the children in KidSafe, fresh fruit and vegetables are a novelty. I remember a young boy named “Jeremy” who was happily enjoying a fresh fruit salad I made for snack time one day. While on his third helping, he turned to me and said,
“This stuff is so good! What’s it called?”
I told him it was fruit salad.
“How do you make it?” Jeremy asked.
“It’s simple,” I said. “You just cut up some fruit, and put it in a bowl,” and then I proceeded to show him.
Jeremy’s eyes went wide and he replied, “That’s it? I’m going to make this at home!”
I liked this moment because while it was such a typical, child-like inquisitive moment, it also made me hopeful that the healthy eating habits taught at KidSafe really do have a chance of making it home with children.
